August another cool month

tempAugust 2013 was another cooler than average month and was in fact the THIRD consecutive month with below-average temperatures, thus confirming what we said MANY MONTHS ago that summer 2013 would be COOLER than average!

The average monthly temperature of 27.1°C was 0.7°C below average. The average maximum monthly temperature of 30.7°C was 1.0°C below average while the average minimum monthly temperature of 23.4°C was 0.4°C below average.

The coolest August ever was in 2005 with a mean monthly temperature of 26.0°C while the hottest ever was in 1999 with a mean monthly temperature of 29.5°C.

The hottest day in August 2013 was on the 6th with a high of 34.6°C. The coolest night in August 2013 was on the 21st with a low of 20.8°C. The hottest August temperature ever recorded was 43.0°C on 10th August 1999 while the coldest was 18.0°C on 23rd August 1997.

The monthly rainfall total was 2.0mm and one day of appreciable rain. This was BELOW the average of 5.4mm for the month. The wettest August ever was in 1997 with 38.6mm.

The wind blew mainly from the northwest with an average wind speed at Zebbug Malta of 8.7km/h. The strongest gust at Zebbug Malta was of 50.5km/h on the 21st from a southerly direction during a thunderstorm.

The mean monthly sea-level pressure was 1014.8hPa, with the highest of 1018.5hPa on the 18th and the lowest of 1010.1hPa on the 10th.
