Relatively cooler and drier air above the Maltese Islands this coming Sunday will lead to a clash with the warmer and moister lower air beneath it. Rain showers are expected and these could be thundery too.

The expected rainfall over 48 hours on Sunday ranges from 1.6mm to 5.4mm (light to moderate, possibly briefly heavy at times in places).

There is also a moderate threat of a severe weather potential due to various factors involved, including high instability and wind shear if we get a direct hit. The main threat seems to be a possible damaging tornado or waterspout forming over or close to the Maltese Islands!

This map shows the probability of where this could occur. One can see that there is a bias for this to hit the southwestern parts of Gozo more than any other part of the Maltese Islands.
